Guatemala: Roots of Agriculture

This program was previously completed as a collaboration between Washington State University and Origins of Food. The Guatemala: Roots of Agriculture program is a 9 day alternative spring break that explores food and agriculture around Guatemala, land of the Maya.

This program allows us the unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in Guatemalan food systems, culture and food. With over 30% of the population employed in agriculture, and around 80% of the population identifying as indigenous, the national cultural importance of agriculture as a factor for sustainability, economics and identity is clear.

From the more modern, cosmopolitan city of Antigua, to the rural and remote towns of the country, we will assess how food and plants intersect with everyday lives. We will meet local leaders who are using agriculture as a positive force for change in their communities, encouraging self-sufficiency, land custodianship, cultural pride and sensible economic development.

When not immersing ourselves on the farms, we will enjoy the other splendors Guatemala has to offer including its colonial Spanish architecture and history, its amazing cafes and restaurants, some of the continent's most inspiring views, and, of course, share our lives and stories with the resilient local people of this incredibly beautiful country.
